John's love for travel can be traced back to his early twenties when he served for three years as an officer in the Merchant Marine, aboard U.S. flag cargo vessels to ports in the Caribbean and along the west coast of South America. Following his time in the Merchant Marine, and after law school he spent five years as an active-duty JAG officer in the U.S. Army with the rank of Captain.

During his time stationed at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia as a Captain, JAGC, John served as legal counsel to the U.S. Army Physical Evaluation Board, for one year providing legal advice to the Board regarding the medical discharge of soldiers who were seriously injured in combat during the Vietnam War.
